Earth Day Pledge Writing and Craft
📝 This post, Earth Day Pledge, was originally published in 2015 and has been updated with new information and resources.
Looking for an easy Earth Day activity for your first or second grade classroom? This Earth Day pledge craft is simple to prep, easy to use, and makes a beautiful display! Students love showing five ways they can help the Earth — and you’ll love how little prep it takes!
What is the Earth Day Pledge Craft?
This activity combines writing, art and environmental awareness in one engaging project! Students trace their hands, write actions they can take to help the Earth on each finger, and put it all together into a beautiful “The Earth is in My Hands” display.
Materials Needed:
✔️ Free “Give Me Five” template
✔️watercolors
✔️glue
✔️pencils
✔️black markers
✔️scissors
✔️construction paper
How to Make the Earth Day Pledge Craft
✔️ Print and distribute the free Earth template
✔️ Have students paint or color the Earth — watercolors work best because you can still see the writing through the paint!
✔️ Set aside to dry then cut out
✔️ While drying, discuss what “The Earth is in My Hands” means
✔️ Brainstorm actions students can take to help the Earth — recycling, composting, walking to school, taking shorter showers, planting trees
✔️ Have students trace each other’s hands and cut them out
✔️ Write one Earth-helping action on each finger in pencil first, then trace with black marke
✔️ Complete the “Give Me ___!” paper by filling in the number of pledged actions
✔️ Assemble and display!

Tips for Success
Use watercolors so writing shows through the paint and allow extra drying time before cutting.
Let students do more or fewer than five actions based on their needs.
This project makes a beautiful bulletin board display!

Um, I said that this post is brilliant and that I love it ( you would obviously know that already) . I also wrote that I loved how you made children think critically about how they can help the planet. Brilliant. Off to share, everywhere!
