Earth Day Pledge Writing and Craft

Are you looking for an easy Earth Day activity for use in your classroom? This Earth Day pledge is easy to prep and easy to use. Use this activity to help students show five simple ways they can help the Earth.

For this activity, you will need the following materials:

  • “Give me Five” template
  • watercolors
  • glue
  • pencils
  • scissors
  • construction paper

Creating the Earth Day Pledge

Introduce the activity, give each student a copy of the Earth from the template, and have them paint or color it. I prefer watercolors because you can still see the writing through the paint. Set them aside to dry. Once they are dry, have students cut them out.

While the papers are drying, explain to the group what the phrase “The Earth is in my Hands” means, then brainstorm a list of actions they can take to help the Earth.

Some ideas include recycling, creating a home compost bin, walking or biking to school, taking shorter showers/baths, planting trees, etc.

Have students trace one another’s hands and cut them out.

Students then write an action they can take to help the Earth on each finger. I have students write their ideas in pencil first, then go over their writing with a black marker after editing.  Students can do more than five actions if they like, or fewer if that suits their learning needs.

Students then complete the “Give Me ___!” paper. by adding the number of actions they pledge to take on the blank line.

Then put it all together as shown in the photo below! Share and display!

Um, I said that this post is brilliant and that I love it ( you would obviously know that already) . I also wrote that I loved how you made children think critically about how they can help the planet. Brilliant. Off to share, everywhere!
