From Seed to Plant
📝 This post, From Seed to Plant Observation Booklet, was originally published in 2013 and has been updated with new information and resources.
Spring is finally here, which means it’s time to learn about seeds and plants! Every year, this is one of my favorite science units because there is nothing quite like watching a tiny seed grow into a real plant.
Before we ever planted a seed, my first graders learned about the parts of a plant, explored the plant life cycle, and even created an imaginary garden. Then came everyone’s favorite part—adopting their very own “soon-to-be plant!”
Each student chose a fast-growing seed, planted it in an individual container, gave it a name, and even signed a certificate promising to care for it. They absolutely loved taking ownership of their new little plant.
From Seed to Plant Observation Booklet
Planting the seed is just the beginning! Before my students even touched a seed, each child received a copy of our From Seed to Plant Observation Booklet. As their plants grew, they observed, predicted, measured, illustrated, and recorded each stage of the growing process.
The booklet has recently been updated with a fresh new design and now includes two different booklet options:
- A picture-only version for younger students and emerging writers.
- A picture-and-writing version for students who are ready to add written observations.
I love having both options because it makes differentiating so easy. Every student can participate in the same activity while working at the level that’s right for them.

By the end of the unit, each child has created a science journal documenting their plant’s journey from seed to plant.

What’s Included in the Seed to Plant Journal
The booklet includes pages for students to observe, predict, measure, and record their plants’ growth from beginning to end, including:
🌱 This Is My Seed
🌱 These Are the Things My Seed Needs to Grow
🌱 This Is What I Think My Plant Will Look Like
🌱 This Is What I Noticed About My Plant Today
🌱 Today I Think My Plant Needs More…
🌱 Here Is What My Plant Looks Like Today
🌱 It Sprouted! This Is What My Sprout Looks Like
🌱 My Plant Is ___ Inches/Centimeters Tall
🌱 My Plant…
🌱 This Is What My Plant Looked Like on Our Last Day
Why I Love This Booklet
One of my favorite things about this resource is that it grows right along with your students. Whether they’re just beginning to draw observations or are ready to write detailed notes, there’s a booklet to meet their needs.
The pages can also be printed individually and rearranged to fit your classroom, making it easy to customize the booklet for your own plant unit.
💡 Teacher Tip: One of my favorite features of this booklet is its flexibility. Many of the recording pages can be used multiple times throughout the unit, so you can print only the pages you need, arrange them in any order, and customize the booklet to fit your classroom.
Bring Your Plant Unit to Life
Watching a seed sprout is exciting, but recording each stage of its growth helps students slow down, observe carefully, and think like young scientists. This observation booklet makes it easy to combine science, writing, measuring, and drawing into one meaningful spring activity.
💚 If you’re looking for an engaging way to document your plant unit, the From Seed to Plant Observation Booklet is one of my favorite spring science resources.
The nice thing about this book is that many of the pages can be used over and over and you can use them in any order you like. Simply print the templates, cut the papers in half, put them in the order you like and you are set to go!
