Doubles facts are one of those math skills that seem to “stick” once students learn them. Better yet, they help students solve so many other addition facts more quickly and confidently. Keep reading to learn why doubles and doubles plus one facts are so important, and grab your FREE flip book printable to practice them!

Why Teach Doubles and Doubles Plus One?

If there is one set of addition facts worth spending extra time on, it is doubles! When students know their doubles facts — 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, and so on — they have a powerful shortcut for solving so many other addition problems. 

That is where Doubles Plus One comes in! Once a child knows that 6+6=12, figuring out 6+7 becomes so much easier — it is just one more!

Teaching doubles and doubles plus one together is one of the most efficient strategies we can give young mathematicians. Instead of counting on their fingers for every single problem, students start to see patterns and make connections. These facts also build the foundation for mental math, fact fluency, and eventually multiplication — so the time you invest now pays off in a big way down the road! 

Why Do Students Struggle with Near Doubles?

Many students can memorize doubles facts but struggle to apply them to doubles-plus-one facts. The key is helping students see the relationship between the two. Once they understand that 8+9 is just one more than 8+8, they begin to use efficient mental math strategies instead of counting. Helping students visualize the relationship between doubles and doubles-plus-one facts allows them to solve problems more quickly and with greater confidence.

Doubles and Doubles +1 Student Flip Books

Materials Needed

✔️ doubles and doubles plus one templates
✔️ printer and paper
✔️ scissors
✔️ pencil

📝 Note: Print the templates back to back as directed in the product.

 Using the Flip Books

✔️ Students fold the template in half.
✔️ They then cut along the dotted lines, making sure to cut only the top page.
✔️ Students then complete the book by writing the correct answer under the flap.

📝 Note: I have recently updated the templates so they look a bit different and, honestly, a bit better!
