Five Little Valentines Rhyme and Heart Craft for Kids

Five Little Valentines fingerplay and heart craft for Valentine's Day circle time featuring five decorated paper hearts and a free rhyme for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.

Five Little Valentines Rhyme and Craft

📝 This post, Five Little Valentines, was originally published in 2014 and has been updated with new information and resources.

Looking for a simple Valentine’s Day activity to add to your circle time? This Five Little Valentines fingerplay is always a favorite with young learners! Pair it with an easy heart craft, and you have a fun way to practice counting, rhyming, sequencing, and fine motor skills while celebrating Valentine’s Day.

One of my favorite things about fingerplays is that they get everyone involved. Even reluctant learners love acting out the rhyme with their handmade hearts, and before long the whole class is joining in!

The craft couldn’t be simpler! Use whatever you have on hand! Here are some suggestions:

Materials Needed

✔️ Construction paper (red, pink, purple, white)
✔️ Googly eyes
✔️ Craft Scissors
✔️ Glitter
✔️ Markers
✔️ Pom poms and Buttons

✏️ Step 1: Create heart templates using an empty cereal or cracker box.

✏️ Step 2: Trace at least 5 hearts using your template.

✏️ Step 3: Cut the hearts out.

✏️ Step 4: Decorate however you like!

Once the hearts are finished, use them to act out the rhyme during circle time. Students love moving the hearts as they recite each verse, making this a wonderful hands-on Valentine’s Day activity.
