Groundhog Day Activities

📝 This post, Groundhog Day Activities, was originally published in 2014 and has been updated with new information and resources.

I love Groundhog Day and I I love it even more as a teacher. There is so much learning that can happen around a single groundhog that comes out of his burrow and may or may not show us his shadow!

In that spirit, I have rounded up a few Groundhog Day activities for you. Enjoy!

Books about Groundhog Day

Let’s begin with books. There are a lot more good books about Groundhog Day now than there were when I first started teaching. Here are my two favorites.

Groundhog’s Dilemma

Groundhog’s Dilemma by Kristen Remenar is the story of a groundhog who accepts gifts and promises from his friends in return for a prediction of either an early spring or a longer winter. Then, on the big day, Groundhog must choose between lying to his friends or telling the truth ultimately, which is the best policy.

Groundhog’s Day Off

In Groundhog’s Day Off by Robb Pearlman, Groundhog is sick and tired of being asked the same questions about the weather year after year. He simply wants to be noticed and ask about the things he likes, so he decides to take the day off. The townspeople don’t know what to do without Groundhog, so they hold auditions, but no one can fill Groundhog’s shoes. Eventually, Groundhog returns, realizing he is important and saves Groundhog Day.

Groundhog Crafts

Here are a few simple, but timeless Groundhog Day crafts. Anything with a paper plate is a winner! I love directed drawings, and so do my students. They go really well with any Groundhog Day writing prompt you have done or will do.
