📝 This post, Popcorn Math, was originally published in 2013 and has been updated with new information and resources.

Popcorn has always had a special place in my classroom—and not just because it’s a fun snack! For years, I used popcorn kernels as a simple classroom reward, and I was always amazed by how motivating one tiny kernel could be.

Whenever I caught a student working hard, showing kindness, staying focused, or doing something especially thoughtful, they earned a popcorn kernel. Sometimes I rewarded individuals, sometimes partners or small groups, and sometimes the entire class. Each kernel was added to our class popcorn jar, and when the jar was finally full, it was time to celebrate.

And yes…we had a popcorn party!

But it wasn’t just about eating popcorn. We spent the entire day reading, writing, counting, graphing, estimating, and playing popcorn-themed games. It quickly became one of my students’ favorite classroom traditions, and they worked incredibly hard to earn every kernel.

One of the things I loved most was that popcorn kernels were inexpensive, reusable, and just as exciting to my students as candy or small prizes. Sometimes the simplest rewards are the most effective.

Over the years, I created quite a collection of popcorn-themed activities for our celebrations. Whether you’re planning a popcorn day, looking for engaging math centers, or simply want to add a little fun to your classroom, I hope these ideas help make your own popcorn celebration a success!
