LEGO Structure Math Games

We all know how to use Legos the “right” way — but have you ever tried using them to practice math skills? If you have a bin of LEGOS sitting around the house or classroom, you already have everything you need for this fun and hands-on math activity!
These LEGO Structure Math activities are perfect for Kindergarten through Grade 3 and work beautifully at home or in the classroom. No formal printables needed — just LEGOS and a little creativity!
What You Need:
✔️ LEGO bricks in 6 different sizes or colors
✔️ Paper and pencil for recording
✔️ A curious kid ready to build!
How to Play:
🧱 Choose 6 sizes or colors of LEGO bricks and assign a value to each one — use smaller numbers for younger children and larger numbers for older children
🧱 Give your child a pile of these bricks only — the quantity of each color is up to you
🧱 Have your child build a structure using the chosen bricks — they can use as many or as few as they like
🧱 Set aside any unused bricks to avoid confusion
🧱 Using a piece of paper, have your child create a math sentence using the values assigned to each brick and add the numbers together

Want to make it more challenging? Try these ideas:
💡 Challenge your child to make a structure with a smaller value than the first one
💡 Challenge your child to make a structure with a larger value than the first one
💡 Assign a target value and have your child build a structure that adds up to exactly that number — for example, can they build a structure worth exactly 25?
LEGO Structure Math with Money
Take it up a notch by turning this into a money activity! Assign a price to each brick and give your child some “LEGO Bucks” to spend. They use their money to buy the bricks they want, then build their structure!
💰 Give a spending limit or simply have them build and figure out the total value at the end
💡 For a bigger challenge, give your child a $10 LEGO Buck and ask them to build a $7 structure — then figure out the change!
More Ways to Use LEGO for Math
Legos are one of the most versatile math manipulatives around! Here are a few more ideas to try:
🧱 Patterns — use bricks to practice making and extending color or size patterns
🧱 Sorting — sort bricks by color, size, and shape
🧱 Counting — use bricks to practice counting skills
🧱 Skip Counting — count the dots on a brick by 2s, 5s, or 10s
🧱 Multiplication — use a 2 by 6 brick and multiply to find the total number of dots!
