Sight Word Practice Box
📝 This Sight Word Practice Box post was originally published in 2012 and has been updated with new information and resources.
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by everything you are supposed to practice with your child at home? Math facts, sight words, handwriting, sounding out words — the list goes on and on! I felt the same way, especially during sight word practice. How was I supposed to keep the old words and new words organized AND make practice fun? I got frustrated with our disorganization and created this Sight Word Practice Box — and it has been a game-changer! The beauty of this Sight Word Practice Box is that it keeps everything in one place and makes practice feel like playtime rather than homework!
Sight Word Practice Box
I knew I needed a base of sorts for all our resources. I still had a few pizza boxes left over from making our pizza box drying rack, so I decided to use one as our base, and everything would fit inside. If you don’t have a pizza box, you can go to your local pizza shop, and they will give you one, or you can use another box you have lying around the house.
Materials Needed to Create the Sight Word Practice Box
✔️ a pizza box
✔️ sight word box templates (click here for more details)
✔️ envelopes ‘
✔️ cardstock (choose your favorite colors!)
✔️ computer and printer
✔️ scissors
✔️ glue
✔️ your student’s word list
Creating the Sight Word Practice Box:

Pockets: I knew I needed pockets and labels to store the word and activity cards. You can buy envelopes or make your own. I made my own from a template found online. This site has a variety of envelope templates to choose from. I created 4 envelopes using colored cardstock- I’m a sucker for pretty colors!
Labels: I then created labels for the pockets on my computer, cut them out, and glued them on the envelopes. I also added a Sight Word practice Box label for fun. I then glued the pockets into the pizza box- see the image above.
Labels include:
This Week’s Sight Words
Past Sight Words
Practice Ideas
Extra Cards
NEW! Quick Reference Cards

What Goes in Each Pocket?
This Week’s Sight Words contains the cards with the words my son is currently working on. I also keep any words he has not yet mastered in this pocket for continued practice. I printed each card twice for the games.
Past Sight Words contains all the sight words we have worked on prior to this week. There is only one card for each word in this pocket; otherwise, it will get too bulky. These extra cards go in the “Extra Cards” Pocket.
Practice Ideas contains a set of cards with the name of an activity that can be done using the materials in the box. I have my son choose a card each time we sit down to practice his words.
Extra Cards for Games contains a second set of all the sight words we have already worked on for games that require two of each word (i.e., Memory or Go Fish).
NEW! Quick Reference Cardsinclude the directions for each game, as a refresher or for adults playing the game with their student for the first time.
Note: The updated version of Sight Word Practice Box includes the practice cards with the first 30 Dolch sight words. To create your own word cards, download this blank template and add the words you are working on.
Cutting out the Cards
This product contains three card sets, which need to be cut out and placed in the appropriate pockets. Sets include the following:
✔️Practice Activity Cards
✔️Quick Reference Cards
✔️First 30 Dolch Word Cards

Sight Word Practice Games
The following games are included in the product. You can choose some of them, all of them, or add your own. If your child’s teachers send home practice activities, add them to your box. Make the box your own!

Blank Game Boards
Sight Word Tic Tac Toe
Sight Word Parking Lot Game
Sight Word Gumball Machine Game
Roll and Alien Sight Word Game
Sight Word Treasure Hunt Game
Sight Word Hunt Recording Set

How do you play Tic Tac Toe for sight words?
I love this box idea!! So great!!
Each player chooses one sight word instead of an x or an o. Then play as usual!

Just bought and downloaded. Looks great! But, I think I’m missing something…where do I find instructions for each of the activities (practice choice cards…eg.beach ball toss, word hunt, word walk, etc.) Am I not seeing it? Please help. Would love to get this started.
If you send me a PM at st*******@****************ma.com, I will send along some directions.
