I created this blank game board a while back when I first started working on sight words with my son. At that time, this board was big enough for our practice, but now his word list has grown and we need a bigger game board. So, I took two of these boards and glued them together. Then I covered the whole thing with contact paper (you can use packing tape or even get it laminated if you like). So now when it is time to work on those sight words (or word families), I grab a dry eraser marker, write the words in the spaces and add a few fun spaces (ie skip a turn, go ahead 2 spaces etc) and we are ready to play. When we are done, I simply wipe it off  and put it away for the next time we need it. My son loves this game so much and asks for it over and over! Yay!

Other uses for a blank game board:

Gather the game board, a die or spinner and playing pieces. Players roll the die and do the following when they land on a space.

  • Letter or Number Recognition: Put one letter or number in each space and name the letter or number  you land on.
  • Letter Sounds: Write one letter in each space and say the letter’s name and sound.
  • Color Words: Write a color word in each space and read the word.
  • Number Counts: Write a number in each space and clap that number of times (or count out that many beans or other counters).
  • Word Families: Write words from a word family (ie -at family– rat, cat, bat, mat, chat, flat) on the board and read the word.
