Consonant Blends Games

When I first started teaching blends, I wasn’t quite sure how to help my students understand them. They knew their letter sounds, but when two consonants appeared together, many weren’t sure what to do.

Then I learned a simple strategy that changed everything—teaching students to tap and mark each sound in a blend. Suddenly, they could see there were two letters making two separate sounds.

The funny part? Once my students learned to mark their blends, I couldn’t get them to stop! Even after I told them they didn’t have to mark every blend forever, they kept doing it!. That’s when I knew the concept had really clicked.

These blend games and activities grew out of that same idea—giving students lots of opportunities to hear, see, say, and practice blends until recognizing them became second nature.

What Are Consonant Blends?

If you’ve ever heard a child slowly sound out stop or black, you’ve already seen blends in action. A blend happens when two or more consonants come together, but each letter keeps its own sound. For example, in the word frog, you can hear both the f and the r.

Learning blends is an important step in becoming a confident reader because it helps children decode unfamiliar words more quickly and accurately. At first, blends can be tricky because students often leave out one of the sounds or rush through the blend too quickly. The good news is that with plenty of hands-on practice, they soon learn to hear and read both sounds with confidence.
