Tally Marks Game and Activities

Have you ever tried to teach tally marks only to watch every single student draw five lines and THEN add the diagonal? 😄 It happens every time — and it is one of those teaching moments that requires a lot of patience and a good song!

Tally marks are one of my favorite things to teach because once kids get it they want to use them for everything! In my classroom, we used tally marks all through the day — not just during math. We used them during calendar time, for classroom voting, keeping score in games, and even for behavior management — just like points!

The key to teaching tally marks successfully? Keep it fun, use them often, and find a good song! Once kids hear a catchy tally marks song, it all starts to click. Below you will find all of my favorite tally marks games, activities, free printables, and resources to help make teaching tally marks easy and fun for Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade.

What Are Tally Marks?

Tally marks are a simple counting system used to keep track of numbers in groups of five. Each tally mark represents one count, and when you reach five, a diagonal line is drawn across the previous four marks to make a group. This grouping makes it easy to quickly count large numbers without counting one by one!

Why Teach Tally Marks?

Tally marks are so much more than a math skill — they are a practical life tool that children can use every single day! Here are just a few reasons why teaching tally marks early matters:

✔️ They make counting and data collection simple and visual — perfect for young learners!
✔️ They connect to graphing and data analysis — foundational math skills for K-2 and beyond
✔️ They support skip counting by fives — a key early math concept
✔️ They are used in real life situations like keeping score, taking votes, and tracking information
✔️ They build number sense and help children see numbers in groups rather than one at a time
✔️ They are engaging and hands on — kids love using them!

The best part? Once children learn tally marks, they will find ways to use them everywhere — and that is exactly the kind of math thinking we want to encourage!
