School Spirit Day Ideas

One of my favorite things about teaching was seeing the excitement on my students’ faces when they walked into school on a special theme day. Whether it was Pajama Day, Crazy Hat Day, Sports Day, or Favorite Book Character Day, the energy in the classroom was always a little higher, the smiles were a little bigger, and the school spirit was impossible to miss.

School spirit days do more than just add fun to the school year. They help build community, encourage creativity, and create memories that students remember long after the day is over. Best of all, many spirit days can be paired with simple writing activities, books, crafts, and classroom discussions, turning a fun day into a meaningful learning experience.

Pajama Day

Put on your favorite pajamas, grab a favorite stuffie or bedtime book, and head to school for a day filled with comfort, books, and fun! Pajama Day is one of the easiest school spirit days to participate in because almost everyone can join in.

What to Wear?

⏾ Pajamas
⏾ Sweatpants and a comfy shirt
⏾ Slippers!

What to Bring?

⏾ A favorite stuffie
⏾ A pillow
⏾ A special bedtime book

What To Do?

Find a Friend
Find a Friend who is wearing pajamas like yours, brought a stuffed animal, or brought a pillow!

Story Writing
Write a bedtime story or a story about the monster under your bed.

How-To Writing
Write step-by-step directions explaining how to have a pillow fight!

You in Pajamas
Draw and label a self-portrait of yourself wearing your pajamas.

Dream Description
Write or draw about the funniest, strangest, or scariest dream you have ever had!

Beach Day

Bring a little summer fun to the classroom with a Beach Day! Students can imagine sunshine, sandcastles, and ocean waves while participating in beach-themed activities.

What to Wear?

☀️ Shorts and a t-shirt

☀️ flip flops or sandals

What to Bring?

☀️A towel
☀️A bucket and shovel
☀️A summer story

What To Do?

Find a Friend
Find a Friend Find a Friend who is wearing an outfit like yours and who also brought sunglasses!!

Write
Imagine you are on the beach, write about what you like to do at the beach, and draw a picture to go with it.

How-To
Write step-by-step directions explaining how to build a sandcastle. Add illustrations to go with each step!

Lifeguard Writing
Imagine you are a lifeguard at the beach, and a swimmer is struggling. Write about how you would help that swimmer get to safety.

Design it
Design a new beach towel or beach bucket you would like to take to the beach.

Crazy Hat Day

Get ready for some laughs! Crazy Hat Day gives students a chance to show off their creativity while wearing the funniest, silliest, or most unusual hats they can imagine.

What to Wear?

👒 A crazy hat

What to Bring?

👒 Your very own crazy hat

What To Do?

Find a Friend
Find a friend whose hat is similar to yours! Look for the funniest, strangest or cutest hat. Also, be on the lookout for the tallest, biggest, or plainest hat in the group.

Crazy Hat Parade
Have a Crazy Hat Parade and show off your creations to the rest of the school. 

Snap a Picture
Take a “picture” of you in your crazy hat! Draw your hat with all the wonderful details you added and share it with a friend.

Design a Hat
Design a crazy hat for your teacher. Maybe they will choose your design for next year’s Crazy Hat Day!

Create Something Crazy
Your hat may not be as crazy as you hoped, so design your dream crazy hat now so you are all ready for next year!

Sports Day

Lace up your sneakers and get ready for Sports Day! Whether students love soccer, hockey, basketball, or baseball, this theme day is a great way to celebrate teamwork and healthy competition.

What to Wear?

🏈A uniform from your favorite sport
🏈 A t-shirt from your favorite team or a team you are on
🏈 Baseball Hat
🏈 Your school’s team gear
🏈 A sweatband or wrist band

What to Bring?

🏈  A ball from your favorite sport
🏈 A non-fiction book about a specific sport or sports in general
🏈 A storybook about a sport
🏈 A trophy or award you received 

What To Do?

Dream Sport
If you could do any sport in the world, what would it be? Write about it!

Sports Poem
Write a poem about your favorite sport. If you need help, write an acrostic poem using each letter of the word.

Be a Designer
Outline the shape of a t-shirt, then design it for your favorite team. Be sure to add a number to the back!

Ball Toss
Ask the group a question and toss a ball from student to student as they answer.

Create a Sport
Have students work together in pairs or small groups to create a brand new sport. Be sure to include the sport’s name, rules, equipment, uniform, and how to win.

Backward Day

Everything is backward on Backward Day! From clothing to classroom routines, students will love turning their day upside down and seeing the world from a different perspective.

What to Wear?

What To Do?

Do the Day Backward
Do your whole day in reverse order! Start with what you normally do at the end of the day, then work your way back to the beginning. Eat your lunch dessert first!

Student Names
Students write their names backward in bubble letters, then decorate. This makes a great bulletin board for the end of the year!

Go Back to the Start
Pick a favorite activity from the beginning of the year and do it again!

Count Backward
Give students a blank 100s chart and have them fill it in beginning at 100 and going back!

Reading Words
Write some words backward on the board and try reading them! Guaranteed laughs!

Calling all superheroes! Students can put on their capes, masks, and superpowers as they spend the day celebrating courage, kindness, and helping others.

Write about someone in your life who is a true superhero. Explain why and give some examples.

Write a story starring a superhero. Make it more fun with these FREE comic strip templates!

Rainbow Day/Color Day

Brighten up your classroom with Rainbow Day! Students can dress in colorful clothing and celebrate all the colors that make our world beautiful.

What to Wear?

🌈As many colors as you can from top to bottom!

What to Bring?

🌈A picture you made using lots of colors!
🌈A book about Colors or a famous artist
🌈 Markers or crayons with unique colors

What To Do?

Rainbow Collage
Use images from magazines to create a torn paper rainbow.

Be a Designer
Create a new crayon or marker color and design its label.

Rainbow Writing
Write a story, letter or poem that is about a rainbow. Use a different color to write each sentence.

Colorful Hair
Draw a picture of yourself on a piece of paper, then use construction paper to add some colorful (and perhaps crazy) hair.

Create a Rainbow
Get a giant piece of butcher paper and work together to make a giant rainbow.

Dress Like Your Teacher Day

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the teacher for a day? Dress Like Your Teacher Day is always filled with laughter as students imitate their favorite classroom role models.

What to Wear?

👩🏼‍🏫 Wear what your teacher wears!
👩🏼‍🏫 Wear a lanyard with your teacher’s name and picture on it.

What to Bring?

👩🏼‍🏫 Bring a coffee/tea cup or water bottle as your teacher does.
👩🏼‍🏫 Bring a favorite book about teachers
👩🏼‍🏫 Bring a small gift or treat for your favorite teacher

What To Do?

Write a Note
Write a friendly letter to your favorite teacher explaining why they are your favorite. Be sure to give examples and say thank you!

Write a Poem
Write an acrostic poem about your favorite teacher using their name or the word “teacher.”

Draw a Picture
Draw a picture of you and your teacher dressed alike, standing side by side.

Make a Plan
Plan a day away from school for your teacher. Write what they would do first, then, next, after that, and finally. Add an illustration and share!

Make an Important Book
Read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown, then use the Important Book template to write about why your teacher is important.

Bring favorite stories to life with Favorite Book Character Day! Students can become beloved characters from their favorite books while sharing their love of reading with classmates.

What to Wear?

📚Bring the book of course!
📚Bring any items that are important to the character or that the character carries with them in the story.

What To Do?

Design a Cover
Design a new book cover for the book your character comes from.

Compare Characters
Working with a partner, make a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two characters.
Book Recommendation
Write a book recommendation for the book your character is in, encouraging a friend to read the book.

Design a Bookmark
Design a bookmark featuring the character you chose.  Punch a hole at the top and add a ribbon or piece of string. Use the bookmark yourself or swap it with a friend.

What to Read?

Share the books that the students brought in! Start with a book walk, then give students time to explore all the books.

School Spirit Day

Show your school pride on School Spirit Day! Whether students wear school colors, team gear, or spirit wear, this theme day is a wonderful way to build community and celebrate being part of the school family.

What to Wear?

What to Bring?

📣 A school banner to hang in the class.
📣 A poem, rhyme, or cheer you wrote for the school.

What To Do?

Plan a Spirit Day Activity
Plan a special activity for the whole school to do. Be sure to include a timeline, what will happen, what materials you need, who will lead the activity, where it will take place, and what participants should wear!

Be a Designer
Design a new t-shirt, logo, or sign for your school. 

Pick a Mascot
If your school does not have a mascot, decide on one for them and describe why that mascot is a good choice for your school. If your school has a mascot, explain why it is or isn’t a good choice.
