Beginning Consonant Sounds

Teaching beginning consonant sounds is one of my favorite parts of teaching phonics. There are so many fun ways to help children learn them—through games, books, songs, movement, videos, and hands-on activities. Whether your students are learning with a partner, working independently, or playing as a whole class, there is no shortage of ways to practice those important first sounds.

One of the things I love most about teaching beginning consonant sounds is that they’re a great confidence builder. Most consonants have one common sound, so students can experience success right away. (We’ll save the fact that letters like C can make more than one sound depending on the vowel that follows for another day!) Once children begin connecting letters with their beginning consonant sounds, they’re well on their way to becoming readers.

Why Teach Beginning Consonant Sounds?

Beginning consonant sounds are one of the first phonics skills children learn because they help students connect letters to the sounds they hear in words. When children can hear that ball starts with /b/ or sun starts with /s/, they’re beginning to build the foundation for reading and spelling.

The more opportunities children have to hear, say, sort, and play with beginning consonant sounds, the stronger those letter-sound connections become. That’s why I love using games and hands-on activities to give students plenty of meaningful practice.

Having an alphabet displayed on the wall gives students a constant visual reference, helping strengthen letter recognition and letter-sound correspondence throughout the day.
