Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Card Game
📝 This post, Games and Letter Cards for Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, was originally published in 2013 and has been updated with new information and resources.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom was one of our favorite read-alouds when my boys were little. We read it over and over, acted it out, and even learned the song version! Such a fun book — and so much learning can be connected to it. That’s why I created these free letter cards and game board to go along with it!
About the Book

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault is a beloved alphabet book that kids absolutely adore! The rhythm, the rhyme, and the colorful illustrations make it a perfect read-aloud for preschool and kindergarten. If you haven’t read it yet — stop everything and go find it!

Preparing the Game and Letter Cards

Download the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Cards and Game Board.
Preparing the cards: Print the letter cards and the card images back-to-back, then cut them out. Alternatively, you can glue the templates back-to-back, then cut them out. I suggest printing 2 sets of cards.

Preparing the Game Board: Print and assemble the two parts of the game board to create one long game board.

💡Laminate the cards and game board for durability if desired!
Ideas for Using the Letter Cards and Game Board
There are so many fun ways to use these letter cards. We even put magnetic tape on the back of the board and letters and hung them on our fridge to play with! Here are some suggestions for use!
💡Recreate the Story: Use the letters to recreate the story as someone reads it aloud. Or have your child create a new story for the letters!
💡Letter Recognition: Lay some of the letter cards on the game board and practice naming them. Remove those cards and add more!
💡Letter Sounds: Put some of the letter cards on the game board and practice their sounds. Remove those cards and add more!
💡Alphabetical Order: Lay all the cards on the table and practice putting them in alphabetical order. Sing the Alphabet Song as you go if needed!
💡 Vowel and Consonant Sort: Sort the letter cards into groups of vowels and consonants. For more information about how to do this, see our post: A Simple Sorting Game for Teaching Vowels and Consonants.
💡 Letter Structure Sorts: Sort letters by their features. In the photo below, letters have been sorted into groups of letters with ascenders and descenders.
💡Word Families: Use the letter cards to create word families featuring different short vowel sounds. Try changing only the first letter of the word to create other words. You can also try changing the last letter of the word as well.
💡Sight Words: Use the letters to create sight words.
💡Spelling Words: Use the letters to practice the words on your child’s spelling list.
💡 Nonsense Words: Use the letters to create nonsense words and enjoy some laughs!
