What Should My Teacher Be For Halloween?
I love activities where students get to share their ideas about their teacher. Their responses are always so different, creative, and often absolutely hilarious! When my teaching partner shared this Halloween writing idea with me, I knew I had to try it with my class.
The idea couldn’t be more fun: What should your teacher be for Halloween?
As soon as I asked my students the question, the ideas started coming. Here are just a few of the costumes they chose for me:
“My teacher should be Spiderman for Halloween.”
“My teacher should be a chef for Halloween.”
“My teacher should be a nice witch for Halloween.”
And, of course…
“My teacher should be a pug for Halloween.”
What Should Your Teacher Be for Halloween?
Before beginning, choose the writing template that works best for your students. There are now 8 updated templates to choose from, making it easy to use the activity with different writers.
I chose my template, added a photo of myself in the center, and made a copy for each student.
Then came the fun part.
I asked my students what they thought I should be for Halloween and why. You should have seen their faces light up! The ideas came pouring out, and what I loved most was how completely different they were. Their costume choices often said just as much about them as they did about me.
Students drew the Halloween costume right onto my photo and then wrote about what they thought I should be and why.
The results were priceless.
Halloween Writing Made Personal
One of the things I love about this activity is that students aren’t all responding to the same generic Halloween writing prompt. They already know their teacher, they have plenty of opinions about their teacher, and they LOVE getting to decide what their teacher should wear for Halloween!
Adding the teacher’s photo to the template makes it even more fun because students get to actually transform their teacher into whatever they’ve imagined. A superhero? A witch? A chef? A pug? Nothing is off limits!

And while they’re having fun with the idea, they’re also practicing coming up with an idea, explaining their thinking, and putting that thinking into writing.
Best of all, it’s easy to prepare and simple for students to understand.

What Should YOUR Teacher Be for Halloween?
This activity was just as much fun for me as it was for my students. I loved seeing myself through their eyes—and I never knew what costume was going to appear next!
If you’re looking for a Halloween writing activity that’s easy to prepare and gives every student a chance to come up with something completely their own, this is such a fun one to try.
