Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday—and not because of the costumes or the candy. It’s the colors, the season, and the fun! As a teacher, I was lucky enough to work in a school that celebrated Halloween, and I was determined to make it both fun AND educational.

Halloween is also a great time for writing. Students already have costumes, candy, pumpkins, and trick-or-treating on their minds, so why not use some of that excitement to get them writing? These are some of my favorite Halloween writing and literacy activities from my first grade classroom.

Halloween Writing Activities

I put some of my favorite Halloween writing and grammar activities together into one easy-to-use resource. It includes several different ways to practice writing and grammar throughout the Halloween season. Here are a few of my favorites!

Halloween Writing Prompts

Halloween gives students plenty to write about! They can write about what they hope to find in their trick-or-treat bags, describe what they plan to wear for Halloween, or explain how to carve a pumpkin.

For the pumpkin activity, students use the sequencing words first, then, next, and finally to explain the steps. Before writing, brainstorm some pumpkin-carving vocabulary together, such as cut, carve, hollow, and pulp. For students who need a little extra support, let them draw the steps first and then use their pictures to help with their writing.

Halloween Silly Sentences and Parts of Speech

Halloween words are perfect for practicing parts of speech! Students sort Halloween words into nouns, verbs, and adjectives and then use the words to create their own silly Halloween sentences.

This was always one of my favorite grammar activities because the sillier the sentences got, the more fun we had with them! After writing their sentences, students illustrate them—which usually makes the results even better.

Roll and Write a Halloween Story

Roll the dice and write! Students roll to determine different story elements and then use them to create their own Halloween story. Because the dice determine the story elements, every story turns out a little different!

The Day After Halloween Paragraph Writing

The day after Halloween can be a little hectic! Students are tired and coming down off serious sugar highs, but they also have plenty to talk about. Instead of fighting that excitement, use it for writing!

Students use one of three planning pages to organize their ideas about Halloween and then turn those ideas into a complete paragraph. Great paragraph writing practice!
