Earth Day is one of my favorite times of year to bring a little extra meaning into the classroom. It’s the perfect opportunity to help students learn about our amazing planet while talking about simple ways we can care for it every day. Over the years, I’ve created a collection of Earth Day activities, writing projects, games, and free printables, so I thought it would be helpful to gather my favorites all in one place.

One of the things I love most about Earth Day is that it shows students they’re never too young to make a difference. Even small acts of kindness toward our planet can have a big impact, and I love watching students realize that the choices they make every day really matter.

Earth Day Writing Projects

A Letter to the Earth

One of my favorite Earth Day writing activities asks students to think about what they would “give” back to the Earth. Students wrap a symbolic gift, write a letter explaining their choice, and create a beautiful bulletin board display while practicing opinion and explanatory writing.

Earth Day Poster Writing Activity

Looking for another meaningful Earth Day writing project? In this activity, students design their own Earth Day posters to encourage others to care for our planet. It’s a wonderful way to combine persuasive writing, art, and creativity while reinforcing the importance of protecting the Earth.

Students use planning pages and real-life examples to develop a clear Earth Day message before creating colorful posters to display in the classroom, around the school, or even in the community.

Earth Day Cupcakes

Want to end your celebration with a fun treat? These adorable garden cupcakes are easier to make than they look and make a sweet addition to your Earth Day celebration.

Materials Needed

🧁 Cake mix (your choice)

🧁 Chocolate frosting (your choice)

🧁 Oreo cookies

🧁 Wafer ice cream cones

🧁 Toothpicks

🧁 FREE Seed Packet Printable

Directions

1. Prepare the cake batter according to the package directions.

2. Stand the empty ice cream cones in a baking pan.

3. Fill each cone about one-third full with batter.

4. Bake according to the package directions.

5. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely.

6. Crush the Oreo cookies to make the “dirt.”

7. Frost each cupcake with chocolate frosting.

8. Sprinkle the crushed Oreos over the frosting.

9. Print and attach the seed packet labels to toothpicks.

10. Place one seed packet into each cupcake.
