Homemade Flags for the 4th of July

Every summer I tried to find one simple Fourth of July craft to make with my boys, and these homemade flags quickly became one of our favorites. They were inexpensive, easy enough for little hands, and best of all, no two flags looked exactly alike! My oldest carefully painted his flag to look just like the American flag, while my youngest created his own patriotic masterpiece. Looking back, I love that neither flag looked the same. Their personalities came through in every brushstroke, and years later those little fabric flags still remind me of celebrating the Fourth of July together.

If you’re looking for an easy patriotic craft to make at home, at summer camp, or in the classroom, these homemade flags are a fun way to celebrate Independence Day together.

Materials Needed

To make your own fabric flags, you’ll need:

White fabric cut into rectangles
Red, white, and blue acrylic paint
Small sponges and/or paintbrushes
Painter’s tape
Wooden dowels
Hot glue

How to Make Homemade Flags

Before we started painting, I showed my boys a real American flag and we talked about its colors and design. My oldest recited the Pledge of Allegiance every morning at school, so he was already very familiar with the flag and what it represents.

Next, I taped each piece of fabric to the table to keep it from sliding while they painted. Then I simply set out the paint, sponges, and brushes and let them create.

One of my favorite parts of this activity was watching how differently they approached the project. My oldest carefully recreated the American flag, while my youngest used the colors and stripes as inspiration for his own unique design. Both flags turned out beautifully because they reflected each child’s creativity.

Once the paint had completely dried, I hot glued a wooden dowel to one side of each flag to create a handle. The finished flags were perfect for waving during our Fourth of July celebration!

A Few Tips for Homemade Flags
