Math Facts Games Kids Will Love

Teaching math facts is one of those topics that seems to swing back and forth every few years. One year it’s all about timed tests and practice, practice, practice. The next, we’re told to skip the drills and let students learn their facts naturally over time. Honestly, I’ve gone back and forth myself, wondering what the best approach really is.

As a teacher, I’ve watched students struggle with more complex math because they still had to count on their fingers to solve simple facts like 4 + 8. At the same time, I’ve watched students freeze during timed tests. The anxiety was heartbreaking. While some children zipped through the page, others stared at it in frustration, knowing how to figure out the answers but unable to calculate them quickly enough.

My own boys struggled with memorizing their addition facts—and don’t even get me started on multiplication! They came home discouraged after timed tests, convinced they were “bad at math,” even though they were capable mathematicians. Those tests didn’t help them learn their facts; they simply made them dread math.

I can relate because I still remember being scolded by my fifth-grade teacher for counting on my fingers. Even now, I occasionally catch myself doing it. Those early experiences shaped the way I think about teaching math today.

So what’s the answer? I don’t know that there’s one perfect solution, but I do know this: games work.

If you walked into my first-grade classroom, you would have seen students laughing, talking, and playing math games. They were practicing their math facts without the pressure of a timed test while building confidence right alongside fluency. By the end of the year, we had an entire shelf full of games, and students couldn’t wait to play them.

I love math games because they’re accessible to everyone. They’re easy to differentiate, encourage problem-solving and mathematical conversations, and help students practice important social skills like taking turns and encouraging one another. Most importantly, they’re fun. And when kids are having fun, they’re usually willing to practice just a little bit longer.

Math Facts Games

These classroom-tested games make practicing math facts engaging, meaningful, and fun.

Zap It! Math Facts Game

This game quickly became one of our classroom favorites. I first spotted the idea from Mrs. Young’s Explorers, who used it for multiplication facts, and immediately knew it would work just as well for practicing addition and subtraction with my first graders.

Materials

To play, you’ll just need popsicle sticks (colored sticks add a fun visual touch), a black pen, and a container to hold the sticks.

How to Prepare

Using your black pen, write the facts you want students to practice directly onto the popsicle sticks—one fact per stick. Print the label template and glue it to your container, or design your own. I also created sets for practicing doubles facts and doubles-plus-one facts since both are important skills for young learners to master.

How to Play

Put all the sticks in the container, including a few “ZAP!” sticks mixed in. Players sit in a circle and take turns drawing a stick and solving the problem on it. If the answer is correct, the player keeps the stick. If it’s incorrect, the stick goes back into the container. If a player draws a “ZAP!” stick, all of their collected sticks go back into the container and play continues.

Wrapping Up

Helping students learn their math facts doesn’t have to mean endless worksheets or stressful timed tests.
