A Valentine’s Day Writing Activity Kids Will Love with Hershey Kisses

Valentine's Day writing activity using Hershey Kiss wrappers to inspire creative writing and colorful student illustrations in the elementary classroom.

Hershey Kisses Valentine’s Day Writing

📝 This post, Valentine’s Day Writing Activity, was originally published in 2018 and has been updated with new information and resources.

I could not resist this idea the first time I saw it—and neither could my first graders! All you need are a few Hershey Kisses, a little creativity, and the right template to create one of the sweetest Valentine’s Day writing activities your students will remember.

Why You’ll Love This Valentine’s Day Writing Activity

Valentine’s Day is always an exciting time in the classroom, but it can be tricky to keep students focused while still embracing the fun. This activity does both! Students get to use their imaginations, practice their writing skills, and create an adorable keepsake or bulletin board display at the same time.

Materials Needed

✔️ Hershey Kisses
✔️ Writing template
✔️ Pencils, markers, or colored pencils
✔️ Glue

How It Works

Start by giving each student a Hershey Kiss to unwrap and enjoy. Then have students glue the empty wrapper onto the template and use their imaginations to turn it into something completely new. They can add details with crayons, markers, or colored pencils to bring their idea to life before completing the writing prompt, “My teacher gave me a kiss, and it turned into…”

The responses are always creative, funny, and completely unique! Over the years, some students have turned their kisses into a kite, a flower, and even, one year, a carpet in their house!  No two ideas are ever alike, making this one of my favorite Valentine’s Day bulletin board displays.
