Trapped in a Snow Globe Writing
📝 This post, Trapped in a Snow Globe Writing Activity, was originally published in 2015 and has been updated with new information and resources.
Every winter, my students looked forward to creating a special writing project to display in the hallway. This “Trapped in a Snow Globe” activity quickly became one of our favorites. Students loved imagining what it would be like to be stuck inside a snow globe, and their creative ideas always made me smile.
The best part was that no two snow globes were ever alike. Some students imagined snowball fights and sledding adventures, while others dreamed up hilarious ways to escape. It was the perfect combination of art, writing, and imagination.

Preparing the Snow Globe
Print the Trapped in a Snow Globe Writing Templates. Trace the bowls onto blue construction paper and cut one circle for each student. Take a photo of each student (about 2 × 2 inches works well), encouraging them to strike a pose that shows how they might feel if they were trapped inside a snow globe. They might look excited, cold, surprised, scared, or even a little silly! Print and cut out each photo.
Creating the Snow Globe
Give each student a blue paper circle to serve as the background for the snow globe. Students create a winter scene, glue their photo into the picture, and then an adult hot-glues the clear plastic bowl over the top to complete the snow globe effect.

Snow Globe Writing
Before writing, have students use the planning sheet to brainstorm what they would do if they were trapped inside a snow globe. Once they have their ideas organized, they can complete the final writing page.

Displaying Student Work
Glue the completed writing page and finished snow globe onto a large sheet of blue construction paper for a winter bulletin board that is sure to get everyone’s attention.

The Snow Globe Family by Jane O’Connor

What would it be like to live inside a snow globe? In this charming story, a tiny family eagerly waits for someone to pick up their snow globe and give it a shake so they can enjoy another snowy adventure. When a winter storm finally arrives, they just might get their wish! This heartwarming story is a wonderful way to spark students’ imaginations before they begin writing about being trapped inside a snow globe.
Snow Globe Wishes by Erin Dealey

As a winter storm approaches, one family spends a cozy evening together inside a blanket fort. After making a wish on a snow globe, a little girl wakes to a magical snow-covered world that invites everyone outside to play. Filled with beautiful illustrations and lyrical language, this story celebrates family, imagination, and the joy of a snowy day, making it a perfect companion to this writing activity.

Silly question, but did you use the 5oz or 12oz clear bowls? Also, I can’t find any places that print photos 2×2, so would you suggest a 2×3 or a 4×4 photo? Thanks!
Hi Natalie,
I used the 5 oz bowls (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053KLWFE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for this project. For the photos, I simply printed them using my color printer on regular paper and cut them out. You could always do 2×3 because you are going to trim them down anyway. Hope this helps!
Stephanie
Thank you!! Last question: What is the diameter of the 5x plates?
I’m not sure what plates you are talking about… Can you be more specific?
Sorry, I meant BOWLS, not plates 🙂
I am not really sure what the diameter is. So sorry!

What type of camera did you use to take the pictures? Could an iPhone work?
You can definitely use your iPhone! My teaching partner used her iPhone and they turned out great. I used my hand-held camera.
