Snowmen at Night Writing Activity
📝 This post, Snowmen at Night Writing Activity, was originally published in 2015 and has been updated with new information and resources.
Every winter, I looked forward to sharing Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner with my class. The story always got my students talking, laughing, and imagining what their own snowmen might do after everyone went to bed. It was the perfect inspiration for a creative winter writing activity.
After reading the book together, I invited my students to create their own snowman on black construction paper. Once their snowmen were finished, it was time for the real fun—imagining what happened after dark!
Students used a simple writing template to tell the story of what their snowman did at night. Some snowmen went sledding, others had snowball fights, and a few even sneaked into town for midnight adventures. I was always amazed by the creativity my students brought to this activity.

Why Read Snowmen at Night?
This activity is a wonderful way to encourage creative writing while helping students practice storytelling, sequencing, and adding details to their writing. Because the book is so imaginative, even reluctant writers usually have plenty of ideas to share.
☃️ It also makes a beautiful winter bulletin board that students are proud to show off.
