One of our favorite art supplies has always been coffee filters! Over the years, we’ve used them to make colorful butterflies, fall leaves, and now these beautiful coffee filter snowflakes.

I have to admit, I was especially excited about how these turned out. We hung them in our windows, and every time the light shined through the colors they made me smile. Winters here in the Pacific Northwest can be gray and rainy, so bringing a little extra color indoors is always a good idea.

Watching the liquid watercolors spread across the coffee filters is half the fun. My oldest carefully experimented with mixing colors, while my youngest was much more interested in squeezing bottle after bottle until his coffee filter was soaked. Both approaches created beautiful snowflakes!

Materials for Coffee Filter Snowflakes

✔️ Large white coffee filters

✔️ Liquid watercolors

✔️ Water

✔️ Small squeeze bottles or pipettes

✔️ Scissors

How to Make Coffee Filter Snowflakes

Add Color to the Coffee Filters

Place each coffee filter on a tray, plastic lid, or shallow box. Use squeeze bottles or pipettes to drip liquid watercolors onto the coffee filters, watching the colors spread and blend together.

Set the coffee filters aside to dry completely.

Fold and Cut the Coffee Filters

Once dry, fold each coffee filter in half, then in half again, and finally one more time to create a wedge shape. Older children may enjoy making one extra fold, but three folds are usually easier for younger kids.

Use scissors to cut small shapes along the folded edges. Be careful not to cut all the way through the folded sides or your snowflake will fall apart. Don’t forget to trim off the pointed tip!
