Rhyming is one of those early literacy skills that can be practiced in so many fun ways. Before children can read and spell word patterns, they need opportunities to listen closely to words and notice how they sound.

Being able to recognize and produce rhyming words helps children develop phonological awareness—the ability to hear and work with the sounds in spoken language. And the best part is that rhyming practice doesn’t have to feel like work!

I created these Robot Rhymes cards as a fun way to practice rhyming with my boys and then again in my classroom. The cards can be used again and again for everything from familiar card games to rhyme hunts, silly sentences, and more.

Practice Rhyming with Robot Rhymes Card Game

Print the Robot Rhymes cards and cut them apart. You’ll have a deck of picture cards containing pairs of rhyming words. Once the cards are cut apart, you’re ready to play!

There isn’t just one way to use them. Here are some of our favorites:

Play a Traditional Card Game

Use the Robot Rhymes cards to play familiar games such as Memory (or Concentration), Go Fish, or Old Maid. Instead of looking for identical cards, players look for two words that rhyme.

This is an easy way to turn a familiar game into rhyming practice.

Go on a Rhyme Hunt

Divide the deck into two piles, making sure each pile contains one card from every rhyming pair.

Hide one set of cards around the room. Give your child or students the other set and have them search for the matching rhyming partners.

When they find the matching card, have them say both words aloud to make sure they rhyme.

Play Speed Rhyme

Divide the cards into two sets as described above. Lay one set face up where students can see all of the pictures.

Give students one card at a time and have them find its rhyming partner as quickly as they can.

For a small group, students can take turns finding matches, or you can work together to see how quickly the group can match the entire deck.

Make Rhyme Lists

Choose one Robot Rhymes card and brainstorm as many additional words as you can that rhyme with the picture.

Don’t worry if students come up with a silly or made-up word! If it follows the rhyming pattern, it still gives them practice listening to and manipulating sounds.

Create Silly Rhyme Sentences and Stories

Choose a rhyming pair and use both words in a silly sentence.

Ready for more of a challenge? Choose several rhyming pairs and see if students can use them to create a silly story. This is a fun way to take the rhyming practice beyond simply matching words.

Create Your Own Rhyming Cards

Once students are comfortable finding the rhyming pairs, use the blank cards to create new ones.

Students can choose a word, think of something that rhymes with it, and draw pictures for their new pair. Add the student-created cards to the original deck and keep playing!

More Ways to Use Robot Rhymes

The cards also work well for literacy centers, partner activities, small groups, early finishers, or a quick rhyming warm-up. Because there are so many ways to play, you can use the same set of cards several times without doing the exact same activity.
