Teaching time to the hour takes practice — there is no way around it! But the right tools make all the difference, and these FREE o’clock card games are some of my favorites for making that practice fun and engaging. Best of all, kids are so busy playing that they forget they are actually learning!

What is O’Clock?

Before children can learn half past, quarter past, or elapsed time, they need to understand o’clock. O’clock means the minute hand is pointing directly at the 12 and a new hour has begun. It is the simplest time concept for young learners and the perfect place to start when teaching time.

Why Teach O’Clock First?

O’Clock is almost always the first time concept introduced to young learners — and for good reason! It is the most straightforward of all the time concepts and gives children a solid foundation to build on. Once students can confidently read and write o’clock times, concepts like half past, quarter past, and quarter to become much easier to understand. Think of o’clock as the anchor — everything else in telling time grows from there!

💡 If your child or student is still unsure about o’clock times, begin with just a few clock cards at a time before introducing the full set. Starting small can help build confidence and prevent frustration.

Simple Check

Before starting any of these games, it is a good idea to get a sense of where your child or student is in their understanding of o’clock times. Lay out all the clock face cards face up on the table and all the time cards face up nearby. Have your child read a clock face and find the matching time card. This quick check will help you decide which games to start with!

Ways to Use the FREE Cards

Memory: Lay all cards face down in a grid. Players take turns flipping two cards at a time. If the clock face and the written time match, the player keeps the pair. If they do not match, flip them back over, and the next player takes a turn. The player with the most pairs at the end wins!

Go Fish: Deal 4 cards to each player and place the remaining cards in a pile in the center. Player 1 asks Player 2 for a specific time — either a clock face or a written time. If Player 2 has the matching card, they hand it over. If not, Player 1 draws from the pile and Player 2 takes a turn.

Old Maid: Remove one card from the deck — its matching card becomes the Old Maid. Deal out all remaining cards and remove any pairs from your hand. Players take turns offering their hand to the next player, who draws one card. If it makes a match, remove the pair. The player left holding the Old Maid at the end loses!

Snap: Deal out the entire deck equally between players. Each player flips one card at a time into the center. When two matching cards appear, the first player to call “Snap!” wins the pile. The player with the most cards at the end wins!

Make a Time: Use these cards alongside our teaching clock for extra practice! Set the clock-face cards aside and place the written-time cards face down. Have your child pick a card and make that time on the teaching clock. You can also set a time on the clock and have your child find the matching written time card.

Whether you play Memory, Go Fish, Snap, Old Maid, or Make a Time, these simple card games give students lots of opportunities to practice reading o’clock times while having fun. The more students play, the more confident they become in telling time to the hour.
