Best bump games for K-2 math and literacy skills including centers and Family Math Night

The Best Bump Games

📝 This post, Bump Games, was originally published in 2017 and has been updated with new information and resources.

Have you heard of Bump?

When I learned about the game Bump, I was immediately hooked! I couldn’t believe a game could be so easy to create, so fun to play, and so good for learning skills. I started making Bump games for both math and literacy concepts and haven’t stopped since — as you can see from the list below!

What is a Bump Game?

If you have never played a Bump game before, you are going to love it! A Bump game is a simple two-player math or literacy game that is as easy to learn as it is fun to play. Here is how it works — each player takes turns rolling a die, drawing a card, or spinning a spinner, solving the problem that matches their turn, and placing their marker on the correct space on the game board. The catch? If your opponent is already on that space, you can BUMP them off and take their spot! The goal is to cover as many spaces as possible — or bump your opponent off the board entirely! Simple, fast, and so much fun!

Why Use Bump Games?

Bump games are one of those rare activities that feel like pure fun but are actually packed with learning! Every turn gives students meaningful practice with key math or literacy skills — addition, subtraction, sight words, and more — without them even realizing they are working! The competitive element keeps kids engaged and motivated, and the quick pace means there is no time to lose focus. Best of all, Bump games are easy to differentiate — just swap out the game board to match your students’ skill levels!

When to Use Bump Games

The beauty of Bump games is that they fit just about anywhere in your day! They are perfect for math and literacy centers, early finisher activities, partner work, and indoor recess. They also make fantastic take-home practice for families and are a huge hit at Family Math Night. With just two players, some cards or dice, and a few markers, Bump games can be set up in minutes and played anywhere — at school, at home, or even on the go!

Below is a list of all the Bump games I have created so far. Some are free to download now, and others are available in my TPT store.
