How to Make a Spider Web from Thread for Halloween

Young boy cutting a homemade spider web made from white thread, with a paper spider and a cartoon spider illustration. Halloween craft activity for kids.

Spider Web from Thread

This post, Spider Web from Thread, was published in 2012 and has been updated with new text and formatting.

I was working on a sewing project when my youngest found the spool of white thread I was using. He grabbed the spool and, not surprisingly, immediately began unrolling it. This is the kid who once pulled every sticky note off a pad and hung them all over the house…

After unrolling a good bit of the spool, he grabbed his kid scissors and began cutting the thread into pieces—which, by the way, is not easy for a 2-year-old!

After cutting for a while, he suddenly declared, “SPIDER WEB!” and was off to create a spider web with my thread, which he then proceeded to cut apart.

Finally, it was nap time, and I put him in his bed. While he slept, I made a really cool spider web to surprise him when he woke up. I added a spider I made from paper. I also took some straws, cut them into about 2-inch pieces, and then cut a slit in each one from end to end. I placed the straws in various spots on the web.

When he woke up and saw the web, his eyes could not have gotten any bigger! He actually shrieked, “SPIDER WEB, MAMA!”

Surprisingly, he didn’t dive right into cutting the thread this time. Instead, he spent a good deal of time moving the straw pieces around the web. After a while, the scissors came back out, and he happily cut the web for quite some time.

When he was done, we said goodbye to our web and went on with our day.

  4. I love when inspiration just hits. This is a wonderful, simple activity I will be doing with the girls. I’m about to do a post on a spider web pretend play and obstacle course. I’ll try to remember to link to this too.
