Look Who is Wearing Glasses?
One of my students got glasses this week, and it brought back so many memories of when I got my own glasses in 4th grade. I had been getting horrible headaches at school and was convinced I had developed an allergy to math — turns out it was just my eyesight!
My first day wearing glasses to school was miserable. I was so afraid everyone would tease me that I spent most of the day on the verge of tears. Thankfully, my classmates were kind, but that fear stayed with me for a long time.
So when my student Christopher came in with his new glasses and those same worries written all over his face, I knew I had to act fast. I was not going to let him feel the way I felt in 4th grade!
Books First
I scrambled to my bookshelf and pulled out every book I had about wearing glasses, and we read them together as a class before anything else. See the book list below for titles.
We ALL Got Glasses
When my students headed to music class, I got to work. Before they left, I snapped a photo of each student’s face, printed it on 8½ x 11 paper, and trimmed around it.
When they returned, I made an announcement: since Christopher got glasses today, we are ALL getting glasses. I handed each student their photo along with some construction paper and set them to work creating their very own pair of eyeglasses. I let my students create, but if you would like them to use a template, try this one from Picklebums.
The results were amazing — every pair completely different, every one wonderful.
And, I’m happy to report that Christopher left that day with a huge smile on his face. His worries were gone, and he was feeling pretty special.

(Forgive the blurred faces- need to keep these kiddos anonymous!)
