Vowels Consonants Sorting Game
📝 This post, Simple Vowels and Consonants Sorting Activity, was originally published in 2014 and has been updated with new information, resources, and a completely new format.
In a previous post, I shared our classroom Super-Friend Vowels. The idea has taken off! We are having a blast with it AND learning a lot. We graphed the Super Friend Letters in our names and even created our own Super Friend Vowel figures.
In that post, I explained the evolution of our “Super-Friends Vowels.” I told my students that vowels are so powerful that they can change their own sounds as well as the sounds of other letters, just as Clark Kent goes into a phone booth and comes out as Superman. After sharing this idea with my teaching partner at the time, she added that “Y” is a villain because it can act as a vowel or a consonant. You can imagine what a hit that was with the kids!
So, sticking with the theme, I created this vowels and consonants sorting game with a super-friend twist! I recently remade the game, and I like it so much better. I hope you do too!

How to Play the Vowels and Consonants Sorting Game
Objective: To be able to identify the differences between vowels and consonants.
✏️Give each player or pair a sorting board, spinner, and set of letters.
Place the cards face up in front of the player. Make sure all vowels are showing, but you do not need to use all the consonants at once.
✏️ Players spin the spinner. If the spinner lands on ‘vowel,’ the player takes a vowel from the card pile and puts it in the correct column on the sorting board. If they spin ‘consonant,’ they do the same but put the card in the consonant column.
✏️ Play continues until all the vowels have been placed on the sorting mat.
That’s it! The game is super simple, but super effective and super fun! It is truly super all around!
This vowels and consonants sorting game is one of my all-time favorite phonics activities because it makes an important concept so much fun! Kids are so busy spinning and sorting that they don’t even realize how much they are learning. That is the best kind of learning there is! Give it a try and let me know how your students like it in the comments below! 💚
