Egg Carton Games for Building Number Sense

📝 This post, Egg Carton Games for Developing Number Sense, was originally published in 2014 and has been updated with new information and resources.

Looking for a simple, hands-on way to practice number sense at home or in the classroom? These egg carton games are easy to set up, fun to play, and a great way to build early math skills using materials you may already have on hand.

I have always loved activities like this because they make math feel more like play. Kids get to touch, move, match, and talk about numbers instead of just looking at them on a worksheet, and that kind of hands-on practice can make such a difference for young learners. With one egg carton, a few ping pong balls, and a free printable, you can practice number recognition, subitizing, counting, and matching in a way that feels simple, playful, and low-pressure.

Why Try Egg Carton Games for Number Sense?

Number sense is one of the most important building blocks in early math. Before children can confidently add, subtract, compare numbers, or understand place value, they need lots of practice recognizing numbers, seeing quantities, and understanding how numbers relate to one another.

That is why I love simple games like this one. They give kids repeated exposure to numbers in a playful, hands-on way. As children match ping pong balls to numerals or dot patterns, they are building skills like:

⭐️ number recognition

⭐️ one-to-one correspondence

⭐️ subitizing

⭐️ counting practice

⭐️ matching numerals to quantities

Supplies Needed

And because the game is interactive, it works well for home practice, math centers, small groups, or even a quick one-on-one activity.

To make your egg carton game, you will need:

✔️ 12 ping pong balls (plastic eggs work too!)

✔️ An empty, clean egg carton

✔️ A Sharpie or paint pen

✔️ A printer

✔️ Scissors

✔️ Optional: contact paper or a laminator for durability

Preparing the Egg Carton

Print the free templates below. Cut out the circles, then glue the dot and numeral circles back to back. Place the circles you want to use face up in the egg carton.

If you would like the game to last a little longer, you can laminate the circles or cover them with contact paper before using them.

Preparing the Ping Pong Balls

Using a Sharpie or paint pen, draw dots for the numbers 1–12 on the ping pong balls — one number per ball. Allow the ink to dry completely before using them.

You can keep the dot patterns simple or make them look more like dice patterns, depending on the skills you want your child or students to practice.

How to Play

Once your materials are ready, there are lots of ways to use this egg carton game for number sense practice. Here are a few easy ideas:

Match the Dots

Place the ping pong balls in a bowl and the dot circles in the egg carton. Have your child choose a ball and match it to the correct dot pattern.

Match the Numerals

Switch the game up by placing the numeral circles face up instead of the dot circles. Then have your child match each ping pong ball to the correct numeral.

Put the Numbers in Order

Remove all but one or two circles from the egg carton. Have your child place the ping pong balls in order from 1–12, using the remaining circles to check their work.

Find the Number Fast

Place all of the ping pong balls face up in the lid of the egg carton. Call out a number and have your child find the matching ball as quickly as possible.

Tips for Success

If you are using this game with younger children, start with just a few numbers at a time instead of all 12. Working with numbers 1–5 or 1–6 first can make the game feel more manageable and help build confidence.

You can also switch up the focus depending on what your child or students need most. Some days, you might practice matching dots to dots for subitizing. On other days, you might focus on numeral recognition, counting, or putting numbers in order.

Why Kids Love It

One of the things I love about this activity is how playful it feels. Kids get to pick up the ping pong balls, match them to the egg carton, and race to find the right number — all while building number sense.

And for grown-ups, it is hard to beat an activity that is low-prep, inexpensive, and easy to pull out again and again.
