Math Fact Practice at Home
After a long hiatus — and let’s be honest, COVID didn’t make things any easier — I am so happy to be back and posting again! So much has happened since my last post, and I cannot wait to reconnect with this community with these Addition Flashcards!
I am still teaching first grade and just started my 21st year of teaching last month — where does the time go?! This year, our school has really been pushing math fact practice, specifically addition to ten, and I have two wonderful new teaching partners who are just as passionate about building strong math foundations for our students.
One of the things we have been focusing on is establishing consistent and meaningful math fact practice routines at home. Each week we send home a math game that coordinates with the concepts we are working on in class — and this week we kicked off our Addition Facts to 10 unit using Math in Focus!
Addition Flash Cards
We decided to start with flashcards, beginning with the 0 facts since they are easy to master and a great way to build confidence while setting the groundwork for daily practice. We love these particular flashcards because they are bright, colorful, and engaging — which always helps! We send home one set per week for students to practice.
Flashcards are just the beginning! There are so many fun and easy ways to practice math facts at home with minimal prep.
10+ Ways to Practice Math Facts FREE Parent Note
We also realized that parents may be looking for additional ideas to help their student practice their math facts, so I put together a parent note called “10+ Ways to Practice Math Facts” — and sent it home with the students in the first week of school.

I am so excited to see how this all plays out this year. What is YOUR favorite way to practice math facts at home?

Hi Stephanie, I really appreciate this parent note about math fact practice. It’s so important to help our kids master the basic facts and build their confidence and fluency in math. I like how you suggested different ways to practice at home, such as flashcards, games, apps and websites. I also agree that it’s better to focus on one operation at a time and review the previous ones regularly. Thank you for this helpful resource!
