Counting Backward with a Rocket Blast Off!
📝 This post, Rocket Countdown : Counting Backward, was originally published in 2012 and has been updated with new information and resources.
Lately, my son has been fascinated by rockets. He’s been drawing them, building them with LEGO bricks, and pretending to blast off on all sorts of adventures. He wasn’t interested in reading books about rockets just yet—and that was perfectly fine with me. When children become excited about something, I love finding simple ways to build on that interest through hands-on activities.
One afternoon, we grabbed a large sheet of paper and worked together to draw a giant rocket. After he painted it, he proudly admired his masterpiece and couldn’t wait for his dad to come home from work so he could show it off.

While we were painting, I realized this would also be the perfect opportunity to practice counting backward from 10, just like astronauts do before a rocket launches. I printed the numbers 10 through 0 along with a “BLAST OFF!” sign, and once the paint had dried, we hung the rocket beside his bed.

As I held the number cards, he asked, “What are those for?”
“Well,” I replied, “if this rocket is going to blast off, what does it need?”
Without missing a beat, he excitedly shouted, “A countdown!”

I spread the numbers across the bed in random order and asked, “Which number do we start with?” Together, we talked through counting backward as he placed each number beside his rocket, starting with 10 and ending with 0. When he reached zero, he proudly added the BLAST OFF! sign underneath.
That evening, as I tucked him into bed, I could hear him quietly counting down to himself while looking at his rocket. He imagined it launching into space over and over again. The next morning he did it again—and then again the following night.
That’s one of the things I love most about simple learning activities. Long after the craft is finished, the learning continues because children naturally return to something they helped create.
I’d say this mission was definitely a success. 💚

An Afterthought about Counting Backward
Looking back, I realize this little rocket project became so much more than an art activity. It turned into a fun and meaningful way to practice counting backward.
Counting backward is an important early math skill that helps children develop number sense and prepares them for subtraction. While many children can easily count forward, counting backward often takes a little more practice. Giving children a reason to count backward—like launching a rocket—makes that practice much more exciting.
If your little astronaut enjoys this activity, keep the learning going by using a number line and moving a small rocket backward one space at a time. Mix up number cards and challenge your child to put them in backward order. Don’t always start at 10, either! Try counting backward from 15, 20, or whatever number your child is working on. You can also walk backward together while counting down or head outside with some sidewalk chalk and write the numbers on the driveway so your child can hop from one number to the next as they count backward.
Sometimes the best learning happens when we simply follow a child’s interests.
