Horse Birthday Party
📝 This post, DIY Horse Birthday Party, was originally published in 2013 and has been updated with new information and resources.
When my youngest started taking horseback riding lessons, he fell in love with horses almost immediately. He looked forward to his lesson every single week, so when his birthday rolled around, choosing a party theme was easy!
At first I wasn’t sure about hosting the party at the stable. It was quite a drive from our house, and I assumed it would be expensive. After talking with his riding instructor, though, I discovered it was surprisingly affordable. Best of all, I didn’t have to plan a lot of games, entertain a house full of energetic kids, or spend hours cleaning before and after the party!
We invited just five friends, kept everything simple, and it turned out to be one of the easiest birthday parties we’ve ever hosted.
Simple Horse Party Favors
I wanted to keep the goodie bags simple too. Instead of filling them with lots of little trinkets, each guest received:
✔ Horse stickers
✔ Two small plastic horses
✔ A wooden horseshoe painted silver
To finish them off, I created simple horse-themed labels for brown paper lunch bags, added the goodies, and tied each bag with brown polka-dot ribbon.

Homemade Horse Birthday Cake
Aside from the goodie bags, the cake was my only big project.
I found a horse picture my son liked online, enlarged it, and used it as a template to cut a horse’s head from a simple sheet cake. Chilling the cake in the freezer for a few minutes before cutting made it much easier to work with.
For the decorations,
✔ Used white frosting for the eye and inside of the ears.
✔ Frosted the cake with homemade chocolate frosting.
✔ Added black frosting for the mane, nostril, and eye.
✔ Dyed shredded coconut yellow to create “hay” around the cake.

The rest of the food was easy—just grapes, cheese, crackers, and juice.
A Birthday to Remember
The party was everything I had hoped it would be. Watching my son share something he loved with his friends made all the planning worthwhile. The children had a wonderful time, and for many of them, it was their very first experience around horses.
It was simple, affordable, and a birthday we will always remember.

how do you make the eyes
Great question! I spread some white icing on wax paper and froze it. I then cut out the eye shape and added an eyeball. Hope that helps!!
