Dump Truck Name Spelling Game
📝 This post Name Spelling with a Dump Truck, was originally published in 2014 and has been updated with new information and resources.
My youngest has always loved dump trucks. If it had wheels and could haul dirt, rocks, or sticks from one side of the yard to the other, he was happy. So when we started practicing how to spell his name that summer, I knew exactly what we were going to use.
He already knew all the letters in his name, but getting them in the right order was another story.
From Dump Truck to Learning Tool
I printed the letters of his name, covered them with packing tape (I love packing tape!) to make them more durable, and tossed them into the back of one of his favorite dump trucks. Then I drove the truck over to him using my best dump truck voice—which, if I’m being honest, sounded more like a robot than a truck! He didn’t seem to mind. He thought it was hilarious.

The dump truck would “dump” the letters onto the table, and his job was to put them back in the correct order to spell his name. He happily dumped and spelled, dumped and spelled, over and over again. He probably would have kept going all evening, but after several rounds, I was ready to call it quits!

A few days later, I had a couple of quiet hours to myself (thank you, neighbor!) and decided to make the activity even more fun. I grabbed a handful of bottle caps I had been saving, wrote one letter of his name on each cap with a paint pen, and turned them into little pieces of “rubble” for his dump truck to haul.

When he came home and found his truck loaded with letter rubble, he was thrilled! He immediately dumped out his load and got to work spelling his name.

Looking Back
Some days he spelled his name perfectly. Other days…not so much. But that wasn’t really the point. He was having fun, building confidence, and practicing without even realizing he was learning. And we had the whole summer to play and to practice!

More Than a Name Spelling Game
Of course, big brother wanted in on the fun too! Since he already knew how to spell his name, I used the same idea to help him learn our home phone number instead. He mastered it in just a few rounds. 🙂

That simple little activity reminded me that the best learning tools don’t have to be fancy or expensive. Sometimes all it takes is using something your child already loves and turning it into a learning opportunity.

Remember that names begin with an upper case letter but the rest of the letters are lower case! It is hard to change the habit!
Love, love, love! I have a toddler who loves dump trucks and is starting to recognize the letters in his name. This would be great to try!
I just tried the name spelling activity and he got it instantly! Thanks for the idea! I used the Recycling Truck we had and he had a lot of fun.
YAY!! That is so exciting Leslie! Thanks for sharing your success!
