They All Saw a Cat Activity
They All Saw a Cat
by Brendan Wenzel
The cat walked through the world, with its whiskers, ears and paws…
And as the cat walked, he encountered all kinds of animals and each saw the cat in a very different way. The mouse saw him as a large and fearsome while the birds saw him small and far away from above.

I have a new favorite book. They All Saw a Cat is an incredible book on so many levels. The illustrations are beautiful, the text is simple and predictable and the way it allows children to see different perspectives is incredible.
After reading the story, I showed my students the picture of how the child in the book sees the cat. I had them look carefully at the illustration and all the details. I then closed the book and asked each one of them to “see” the cat through their own eyes.
Here is what they came up with:
Next year, when I read this book to my first graders, I will add a different twist- I plan to have a variety of materials on hand such as bubble wrap, colored cellophane and wax paper and have them draw the cat through that lens!
Can’t wait!!
