Popcorn Reading: A Reading Strategy
📝 This post, Popcorn Reading, was originally published in 2013 and has been updated with new information and resources.
I first read about popcorn reading years ago and have been using it ever since — and my students absolutely love it!
What is Popcorn Reading?
Popcorn reading is a fun way for a group to read aloud without the teacher calling on students. Here’s how it works:
One student begins reading. After reading a reasonable amount, they say “Popcorn!” and choose a classmate to continue. The trick? That person must have been following along — or they can’t take a turn and someone else gets “popcorn-ed!” 🍿
My students love this and I love it too — it puts reading aloud in their hands and allows me to sit back to observe, take notes, and even participate!
The Popcorn Kernels

As a visual person, I knew my students needed a little something extra to stay engaged. So I created these popcorn kernels for popcorn reading! Each student gets a kernel and lays it face-up in front of them. After reading, they flip it over to signal they’ve had a turn. When all kernels are flipped, we start again! 🍿
Tips for Using the Popcorn Kernels
💡Teach the expectations for this strategy very explicitly before you begin — it will save you so much time and energy later on!
💡I always tell my students “hands-off your popcorn kernel” except after you read. It keeps the fidgeting to a minimum!
💡Allow students to keep their own kernel in their folder or use it as a bookmark for chapter books!
💡Laminate the kernels for longer use — they will last all year!
Grab the popcorn kernels and more in our TPT store!
