Bob the Artist Book Review and Craft
I am literally in love with this book– the pictures, the storyline– everything is wonderful! I ordered it on a whim really. One of those nights where Amazon Prime was calling my name and before I knew if, I had ordered way more books than I should have. Thankfully they were all good, but this one stood out AND it called for a craft to go with it.
Bob the Artist
by Marion Deuchars
Bob is like the other birds in every way, except for his legs. They are really skinny. When the other birds begin to tease Bob about his legs, he tries everything he can think of to change them. He tries exercise, eating more and even dressing to cover them up. Nothing works until Bob walks into an art museum and is inspired! He decides to paint his beak to look like different works of art and others no longer see his skinny legs, but instead see the beauty in his beak and in other ways.
I read this book to my first graders and asked them to make their own version of Bob. They used black construction paper to make his body– including his skinny legs. 🙂
I then showed them a variety of famous paintings and asked them which inspired them.
They then created Bob’s beak based on their inspiration. Some copied from the paintings while others simply designed Bob’s beak with a pattern or design they created.
Can you tell which painting inspired this young artist?
Finally, they put it all together. Here are some the “Bobs” the class came up with.
