Alien’s Love Underpants Craft and Writing Activity
Have you read this book??? Honestly it has been sitting on my bookshelf in my class for several years now and only last week did I finally pull it out and read it to my first graders. And, oh, did they love it! What’s not to love about the combination of underpants and aliens when you are 6 and 7!!
Aliens Love Underpants by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort
“When little aliens fly down to Earth, they’re not visiting because they want to meet the Earthlings. They simply want to steal everybody’s underpants! Those silly aliens love underpants in all sizes and colors–large or small, red or green–and they like them in every kind of fabric. They think that Mom’s pink, frilly panties are a perfect place to hide. And Grandpa’s woolly long johns make a super-whizzy slide!” (Amazon review)
After reading the book, we of course, had to make our own aliens in underpants! We began by making our aliens and then writing about them later.
Making the Aliens
We began with the head. The only “requirement” I gave was that their head had to be big– about the size of half a piece of construction paper. Other than that, they could go crazy and add whatever alien like details they wanted.
After the head (and neck if they desired), they were to pick the writing paper and a background paper for the writing and attach it to the head. The writing would be the aliens body.
We then added “hands.” I gave my class an option- to use a stencil for the hands or to just go for it and create their own. Most used a stencil, but a few made their own. I love how the student on the left made 4 hands!
Then came the underpants. Again, I offered a stencil for those who wanted it. I only had two students choose to make their own underpants. I asked the students to decorate their underpants as they liked using construction paper only. After the underpants were done, students could add legs and feet if they desired.
Writing Activity
Once our aliens were complete, it was time to write. I used my own alien in underpants to model how to write about my alien’s undergarments and then had my students do their own writing.
Here are few finished aliens. Aren’t they wonderful??
