Windblown Book and Activity

I love this book. Windblown by Eduard Manceau is a wonderfully simple book. It tells the story of seven scraps of paper blown along by the wind. On each page, the scraps create an animal who also claims to be the own of the scraps. The chicken says they are his, the fish says they are his and the bird, the snail and the frog all say the same. Finally, the wind claims the scraps and with one last gust, he blows them to the reader and says, “They’re yours now too. What will you do?”

I read this book to my first graders last week. They loved it and were totally engrossed in the story. After reading, I asked the kids the same question as the wind asked. What will you do? I then gave them each a copy of the page photographed below and asked them to create an animal of their own.

The kids just took off! Their ideas were incredible. Here are some of their creations:
