Number of the Day Activity Pack
UPDATED!!!
A few years ago, BMTM shared Number of the Practice Sheets for Second Graders. Today we are sharing another Number of the Day Activity Set for First Graders although it could be used with other grades as well. This is the set that I use daily with my class as does my teaching partner.
Each day, the students arrive at school and see our Number of the Day Number Board on the whiteboard. There are three numbers on the board- one basic, another a bit more challenging and the third the most difficult. Below is an example:
Students choose the number they would like to use for their number of the day morning work. One might think that most students would choose the most easiest number each day, but in reality, they are very good at choosing the number that best matches their ability!
The Number of the Day Activity Packet comes with over 20 different papers for morning work. The papers themselves start out very simply and get progressively more challenging as they go on. The nice thing about this set is that papers can be repeated to reinforce skills, students can be using different sheets at the same time to differentiate and there is a good mix of skills on each sheet. Here are a few examples of completed work by my first graders:
This activity takes a bit of training at the beginning of the school year and some guidance as you introduce new skills, but over all, it runs itself and allows for much needed mathematical practice.
Here are a few more examples that are in the packet:
NEW! NEW! NEW!
I have recently updated our Number of the Day Activity Packet to include more mathematical concepts including basic number sense, place value to 100 and making tens. Here are a few of the new sheets recently added:

Our school dropped the number of the day in the second grade and replaced it with “mystery number” that takes students through a set of audio cues to construct the number. Too bad, because making a number really reflected students’ current level in math!
Wow! That’s interesting. My students LOVE the Number of the Day and have learned so much from it!
