Nick Sharratt and the Virtual Book Club for Kids
WHEN A MONSTER IS BORN
It’s that time again! The October edition of the Virtual Book Club for Kids featuring the works of Nick Sharratt. I had heard of Nick Sharratt and probably read many of his books along the way, but had not really stopped to take it all in. Sharratt has an incredible collection of books that he has authored, illustrated or both. Finding his books here in the States was not an easy task. But after a few weeks of looking, waiting for library books to be available and even ordering a few on Amazon, I decided to feature one of the books he illustrated. I chose, When a Monster is Born. Sean Taylor wrote the book.
“When a monster is born . . . there are two possibilities—either it’s a FARAWAY-IN-THE-FORESTS monster, or it’s an UNDER-YOUR-BED monster. If it’s a FARAWAY-IN-THE-FORESTS monster, that’s that. But if it’s an UNDER-YOUR-BED monster, there are two possibilities…”
The story continues on and on each page two possibilities are offered- a simple, over and done with option– “Either it eats you…and that is that.” or a another more “open-ended” option — “or you make friends and take it to school.” The book presents so many humorous possibilities the reader cannot help but keep turning the pages!!

Creating Our Monsters
So after reading the story, my boys and I decided to create our own monsters. We did not specify whether it was a faraway-in-the-forest monster or an under-your-bed monster. It was simply a monster.
First I prepared our materials:
I cut the bodies, arms and feet from felt and added a bunch of other craft supplies to the tray. I put some white paint in a dish with some sponges cut to create rectangles. I thought this might be a fun way to add teeth to our monsters.
My eldest had no interest in helping :(, but my youngest was thrilled to be involved. So we set to creating our monsters. First we each made our own and then we created a few together.
Here are our monsters. The first, my son did on his own and the next two we worked on together.
