Room on the Broom Movie Review and Giveaway
We have loved Julia Donaldson’s book, Room on the Broom, since the day we discovered it tucked away on a bookshelf in a cozy bookstore in Sydney, AU. The story is simple, a witch and her cat are riding on her broom, “when the wind blew so wildly, it blew off [her] hat.” Luckily a kind dog finds her hat and all he wants in return is a ride on her broom.
He dropped it politely, then eager said (As the witch pulled the hat firmly down on her head).
‘I am a dog, as keen as can be. Is there room on the broom for a dog like me?
The witch answers, “Yes!” and the dog hops on board and they fly off only to have the witch lose her bow and then her wand. Both items are soon discovered by friendly creatures who also asks, “Is there room on the broom?”
Eventually, the crowded broom snaps in half and all the passengers fall to the ground where a dragon, who is “as mean as can be”and loves to eat “witch[es] with french fries,” awaits. As the witch is being carried away by the dragon an unlikely creature saves her and the frightened dragon flies away.
Recently we were given the opportunity to review the DVD version of Room on the Broom from NCircle Entertainment. So my boys and I cuddled up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and watched the video together. Needless to say, we all loved it and have watched it several times since.
What struck me most was how true the video was to the book. The storyline did not change, the characters remained the same and the animation looked just like the illustrations in the book. The additions to the story, like the cat’s reaction to the dog wanting to join them on the broom, added a bit of humor to the story which we all really liked.

I will watch this with my almost 4 year old son. My older children enjoyed this book also, so I wouldn’t be surprised if at least 2 of them watched too!
