Books About Fall
Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the colors, the smell and all the fun activities that happen at this time of year. Halloween is my favorite holiday and my birthday happens to fall in October. Since fall is my favorite season, you can imagine I have quite a collection of books about fall on our shelves. Here are some of our favorites.
Red Leaf Yellow Leaf
Lois Ehlert
Who doesn’t love Lois Ehlert? I love everything she has written and this book is no exception. In Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf, Ehlert uses a variety of materials including seeds, fabric, wire and roots along with watercolors to introduce children to the life of a tree as seen through the eyes of a child.
Fall of Freddie the Leaf
Leo Buscaglia
This is not at all a light hearted story, but it is an timeless book that tells the story of a leaf named Freddie and his fellow leaves as they change through the seasons and eventually fall to the ground with the winter’s snow. This story depicts the delicate balance between life and death and is often used to help people come to grips with life and death.
It’s Fall
Linda Glaser
A young boy describes what happens to animals, plants and trees in fall. The simple text and stunning illustrations draw the reader into the story and help young readers begin to understand what happens during fall.
Fall Mixed Up
Bob Raczka
“Every Septober, Every Octember, Fall fills my senses with scenes to remember.”
This is a silly story with fantastic illustrations that will make children laugh every time they read it. The text is all mixed up and the reader is invited to find the mistakes.
Leaves
Davide Ezra Stein
This is the story of young bear’s first autumn and he is surprised when the leaves start fall off the trees. He tries to reattach them, but when it doesn’t work he becomes tired and lays down to sleep. When he finally awakes, it is spring and new leaves have grown all around him.
Leaf Trouble
Jonathon Emmett
When Sam discovers all the leaves falling from the trees, he and his sister try to put them back on the trees. But when they continue to fall back to the ground, he runs to his mother who explains what is happening and Sam is finally able to enjoy the fallen leaves.

Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin
Tad Hills
Duck and Goose want a pumpkin just like their friend has. They search high and low for a pumpkin with no luck. When their friend suggests they look in the pumpkin patch, the pair finally finds the perfect pumpkin.
How Do You Know It’s Fall
Rookie Read About Science by Allan Fowler
I am a huge fan of the Rookie Read About Series. This book is the perfect introduction to fall for young children. Simple text, gorgeous photographs and just enough information help children understand what is happening around them during the fall.
