Teacher Mama: Blends

As my son is reading more and more words, he is encountering new and different spelling patterns. Lately, it seems the consonant blends are popping up everywhere including on his sight word list from school.  We have been working on the sounds the blends make, but I wanted to provide  my son with a visual cue as well. So, this is what I came up with for the blends “sh”, “ch” and “br.” I printed out these visual cues and they are now hanging with his sight word cards, short vowel friends and his rocket ship countdown.

The “sh” blends sound like “shhhh” which you say when someone is sleeping.

The “ch” blend sounds like the “ch” in “Choo! Choo!”

The “br” blend sounds like what you say when you are very cold, “Brrrrrr!”
