Picture Books about Rescuing Dogs

We are just about to celebrate our puppy’s first birthday. While he was not officially a rescue pup, his mom was. He is a wonderful mutt that brings so much joy to our family. To celebrate his birthday, we bring you two wonderful picture books about rescuing dogs.  Both books are fantastics and must reads for any dog people out there!

Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings

“This picture book shares the tale of Arfy, a homeless mutt who lives in a box in an alley. Arfy writes to every person on Butternut Street about what a great pet he’d make. His letters to prospective owners share that he’s house broken! He has his own squeaky bone! He can learn to live with cats! But, no one wants him. Won’t anyone open their heart–and home–to a lonesome dog? Readers will be happily surprised to learn just who steps up to adopt Arfy.” (Amazon)

Sad, the Dog by Sandy Fussell

“A clever little dog christens himself “Sad” when his humans fail to give him a name. Although they feed him and wash him, they don’t appreciate his many gifts, like his love of singing (“stop that yapping!”). When the people move away and leave Sad behind, Sad is heartbroken. But then a new family with a young boy arrives at Sad’s house in a big truck. Although Sad is initially frightened, it soon becomes clear that the boy is just the right person to make a dog’s life complete with playtime, treats, and a brand-new name: Lucky. Welcoming illustrations illuminate this joyful tale, which reminds young readers to appreciate themselves and the ones—human or otherwise—who depend on them.” (Amazon)
