Teacher Mama: Ordinal Number Practice and After School Linky

Ordinal Number Practice

Boy Mama Teacher Mama | Teaching Ordinal Numbers

Ordinal numbers are fun! Kids seem to know them simply from playing games, running races and trying to get done before someone else does it first.  Aside from simply knowing who is first, second and third, students should be able to recognize both the word and numeral representations of ordinal numbers. Here are a few ways I practice ordinal numbers with my first graders.

Who Finished First?

I display this “race” on the board and explain that this is a race where each of the runners finished in a certain order and that the place in which each person finished can be designated by an ordinal number like “first” or “second.” I then ask children such questions as which runner came in first? Second? etc  I also add in positional words such as who finished before the pink runner? After the yellow runner?

Who Finished First- Changing Runners

These cards can be used in the same way as the first game, but since each runner has it own card, the order can change and you can use all of them or only a few at a time.  You can also give each child a card and say something like– “Blue runner, you are first.” “Red runner, you are second.” and students have to get themselves into the proper order.

Ordinal Number Memory

Use the game cards to place Ordinal Number Memory with the number and the written word. Below is an example of a match,  This game can be played by individuals, pairs or even as a whole group. My students love to play any memory game using our coordinate memory game board.

Math Wall Words

Finally, we have word cards that have the words and numbers hanging on our math wall. These words remain on our wall all year for students to refer back to when needed.

Love this game not only for the younger ones, but is great for older kids as well. Just use bigger numbers! Lots of good math to be had with this one.

  1. Thank you SO much for sharing your ideas! I have followed you for a while and use your stuff often while homeschooling my boys:) I really hate to point this out, but I noticed in your picture that the word form of “8th” is misspelt – maybe something you noticed and fixed for your own use already, but in the case you overlooked, just wanted to let you know so you weren’t disappointed later on! I hope you understand what I mean! Thank you again for ALL the wonderful ideas you provide! I’ll be incorporating the memory game this week:)

    • Thank you so much for pointing it out! Those are the little things I miss when I get immersed in creating! I will fix it ASAP! Glad you like the ideas on BMTM! Thanks for your kind words!
