Here are some great penguin stories my boys and I have enjoyed lately.

National Geographic Readers: Penguins
I love almost anything National Geographic publishes for children. This is no exception. The pictures are gorgeous and the information shared is clear and easily understood by young children. The pages with the sizes of the different kinds of penguins was a favorite with my first graders.
Penguin by Polly Dunbar
If nothing else the cover of this book is enough to draw you in! When Ben rips open his present and finds a penguin inside, he says. “Hello, Penguin!” but the penguin does not respond. Nothing Ben tries can get the penguin to talk. See what Ben tries to do to get penguin to understand him and for him to understand what Penguin is trying to say.
A Penguin Story by Antionette Portis
This book is written and illustrated by the person who wrote such wonderfully, simple books as Not a Box and Not a Stick. Edna, the penguin, yearns for something more than eating and playing in her world of white snow, black night and blue sea. She knows there is something else out there and ventures far off to find that something. And, indeed, Edna DOES find that something else….
Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester
Tacky is an odd penguin whose strange behavior annoys his “perfect” friends. Annoys them, that is, until Tacky’s silly behavior saves the day.
Penguin and Pinecone: A Friendship Story by Salina Yoon
When Penguin finds a lost pinecone, an unlikely friendship blooms. Soon thought, Grandpa Penguin tells Penguin that pinecones belong in the warm forest not the cold snow. Penguin returns pinecone to the forest and awaits the day he and pinecone can be reunited. When Penguin returns to the forest to check on his friend, he learns that not only has his love for his friend grown, but so has his friend- into a tree!
Fluff and Billy by Nicola Killen
Fluff and Billy are the best of friends. They do everything together and alike. That is until one day something happens that rocks their friendship. Not to worry though, Fluff and Billy are able to work it out and stay the best of friends.
Lost and Found by Olive Jeffers
When the boy finds a lost penguin at his door, he knows the only thing to do is to return it to where it came from. The journey to the South Pole is a long one and to pass the time, the boy tells the penguin stories. When they finally arrive in the South Pole, both the boy and the penguin are sad to part. It is at that moment that the boy realizes that the penguin isn’t lost at all! It was just lonely. Also see Jeffers’ companion book, Up and Down

That’s a great list! I think it is the right time to do some Winter activities with Aarya…and I HOPE he likes Penguins too 🙂
We love penguin books! Here are few more favorites: “Where is Home, Little Pip” and “Don’t Be Afraid, Little Pip” both sweet books about a penguin family. “One Cool Friend” about the coolest friend one could imagine who perfectly complements his human boy (and perhaps the coolest dad, too). For non-fiction Smithsonians “Penguin’s Family”.
And one more “Penguin Post” about a little penguin charged with delivering the mail while mom fishes and dad keeps the egg warm.
