Stories about Pugs

I know there are other Pug Mamas out there who would love to have some books about Pugs to share with their human kids.  We have two Pugs, Manzie and Tofie, who were our kids before we had our boys. Over the years, I have collected books featuring Pugs and now have a pretty decent collection.  Here is a list of our favorites and a few others.  Feel free to share this with other Pug loving humans you may know.

Unlovable (Dan Yaccarino)

This is MY favorite Pug book.  It has been read over and over and is falling apart.  We may have even read this one to the Pugs (and the boys of course). In, Unlovable, Alfred, the Pug, is taunted and teased by both the family cat and goldfish.  He is constantly told just how unlovable he is. Alfred takes solace outside in the yard where he befriends a new dog next door.  As the two dogs get to know each other, Alfred, ashamed of being a Pug, tells the new dog that he is actually a Golden Retriever.  One day, the neighbor dog digs beneath the fence to meet Alfred face-to-face only to learn that he is not a Golden Retriever after all, but a Pug just like him!  The two Pugs become best of friends and finally Alfred feels lovable.

For the Love of A Pug (Woodleigh Marx Hubbard)

Hubbard has taken traditional nursery rhymes and turned them Pug!  “Old Mother Hubbard went to her cupboard/ to get her poor Pug a bone” and “How much pie could a Pug put away/If a Pug could put pie away?” are just two examples of Hubbard’s work.  Her beautiful illustrations paired with the rhymes make for an adorable addition to a Pug library.

Say Hello to  Zorro! (Carter Goodrich)

Mister Bud has been the dog of the house for quite some time and has established a routine that everyone knows they must follow.  One day at “make a fuss time,” Zorro, the Pug, arrives and throws everything off.  At first Mister Bud wants nothing to do with Zorro, but after some time, the two dogs realize they actually have quite a bit in common and become best of friends.

Other books in the series:

Naughty, Naughty Pets: Dig, Ivan Dig! (Wendy Ann Gardner)

Ivan the Pug has been very naughty.  He has been pent up in an apartment and becomes bored.  So, he starts digging. He digs a hole through the door and a hole though the floor.  When Ivan realizes what he has done and how much trouble he will be in, he puts on a pair of overalls, grabs some tools and repairs the damage.

Chick ‘n’ Pug (Jennifer Sattler)

Chick has read “The Adventures of Wonder Pug!” 127 times.  The story is packed with adventure and excitement exactly what is missing in the chicken coop. So, Chick decides to venture out of the coop and find some excitement of his own. While out, he runs into a real Wonder Pug who, to Chick’s disappointment, really wants only to sleep.  No matter what Chick does, Wonder Pug won’t budge.  When Chick decides that Wonder Pug is in danger, he takes things into his own hands and saves the day.
