Tree: a Peek-Through Picture Book
This book arrived on my doorstep a few weeks ago. I immediately fell in love with the book just looking at the colorful cover. I shared it with my youngest who loved turning the pages and seeing what “peeked-up” next. I also shared it with a colleague who was teaching about the seasons in her Pre-Kindergarten class. She read the book to her students and then ordered a copy to keep in her classroom.
by Britta Teckentrup
The book begins in winter when all is still and icy when owl invites the readers into his tree where he can see all the forest animals that come and go through the seasons. Each page shows a new group of animals playing and living in and around the tree. We meet baby bears, buzzing bees and busy squirrels. Each new animal “peeks” through the tree in the clever cut-outs created by Teckentrup.
This is a wonderful book to teach children about the changing seasons and the animals that come and go throughout the year.
Some follow-up activities might be:
Write about your favorite season.
Draw a tree in your favorite season.
Create a panel or mural with the tree showing how it changes throughout the seasons.
Create a fingerprint tree.
Make a tree and use tissue paper for the leaves.
Create a peek-a-boo tree and have different animals peek through during their season.
Act out the seasons as if you were a tree.
What would you do?
This book would pair well with Kate Messner’s books, Over and Under the Snow and Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt.
