Pumpkin, Pumpkin: Stick and Rhyme

This is my absolute favorite Halloween rhyme. I did it every year when I taught preschool and have also done it every year with my eldest. This year, I was finally able to do it with my youngest.

Pumpkin, Pumpkin, round and fat.

Turned into a jack-o-lantern just like that!

Materials

• orange paint
• white paper
• black paper or permanent marker
• glue
• empty cereal box

To make your pumpkin/jack-o-lantern stick first follow the directions in our post, Teacher Mama: Fall Fingerplays (Apple and Pumpkin), for creating the pumpkins.

You will only need 2 pumpkins for this activity. The tricky part is that you need to create both sides of the pumpkin so when you trace your template, trace once using the front of the template and once tracing the back.

Once you have your two pumpkins cut out, choose one to glue to the printed side of the cereal box and cut it out again.

Flip the pumpkin over and glue the popsicle stick to the cardboard.

Then add the second pumpkin on top of the stick.

Add a stem. I took a piece of the cereal box, folded it in half- plain side out, cut out a stem and glued it between the front and the back sides.  You can do this when you add the stick if it is easier.

Add a face to one side of the pumpkin.

Now your stick is done!

How to Use Your Pumpkin Stick

Say the first line of the poem, “Pumpkin, pumpkin, round and fat. Turned into a jack-o-lantern just like…”  while showing your child or students the plain pumpkin. Then as you flip the stick to the jack-o-lantern side, finish the rhyme and say, “that!”
